Fresh Water Aquarium Plants

Fresh water aquarium plants are the perfect solution for those that want natural decorations in their tanks. As plastic plants can rip the fins of your fish and add a distinctively artificial appearance to the aquarium, making use of live plants can help create the natural environment that your fish need in order to live as comfortably as possible.

There are several things that you need to remember when selecting fresh water aquarium plants, however. First, you need to make certain that the plants are healthy. While fish diseases, such as dropsy, are unlikely to be transmitted through the addition of new plants to your tank, other problems can be brought in with live plants. The most major problem is snails. While a snail can have benefits to an aquarium, they can quickly infest the tank until you have hundreds of them, which can massively throw off the cycle in the tank. This can result in the death of your fish and plants, in addition to giving your tank an ugly appearance.

Plants take up CO2 and give off O2 or oxygen. Without plants no Oxygen and no life. Animals like fish take up the O2 and burn it to CO2. Perfect you will say. And yes in nature that is the case. In a relatively small tank like an aquarium CO2 levels can easily drop below what is needed for a healthy plant life. I always install a CO2 system. An added benefit of such a system that it gives you some control over de acidity or Ph of your aquariums water. I added some more information on these systems in this article about plants and CO2 systems

In addition to this, you need to remember that fresh water aquarium plants need to be trimmed on a frequent basis, so that any dying plant material can be removed from the tank. This trimming also helps control the growth of the plants and maintain the appearance that you want in the aquarium. Some people see "Aquatic Gardening" even as a more satisfying hobby then regular fish keeping

The third factor of fresh water aquarium plants that you need to consider deals with the type of fish that you have in the tank. Some fish, such as discus, enjoy plants, which can result in the destruction of the plants. On account of this, you may need to be careful of what plants you put into the aquarium, unless you are not concerned with whether or not your fish eat or tear the plants.

The final aspect of fresh water aquarium plants that you need to keep in mind is the fact that plants need light to survive. If you have a deep aquarium or you do not have a lot of natural light in the room the aquarium is in, you will want to make certain that the aquarium lighting you have is strong enough to promote plant health.

If you keep all of these things in mind, you should be able to have beautiful fresh water aquarium plants without any of the hassle usually associated with plant keeping.
