South American Cichlids
If you are looking for a good addition to your freshwater tanks, South
American Cichlids are one of the first species that you should consider. If
you have enough tank space, and a good tank layout, these fish can be a
colorful addition to any aquariums.
When you purchase South American cichlids, you should be aware of the fact
that there are many different species that have different requirements. Some
of these fish are aggressive, and only like eating live food, and others are
docile and peaceful, eating plants or algae. On account of this, you will
need to do research on the type of fish you are considering, and make
certain that your current tank situation is acceptable for the fish.
When you are doing your research, there are several things that you need to
keep in mind. PH levels, water temperature, food, full size of the fish and
temperament should be among the top priorities. If you do not know any of
these requirements for the fish you like, it is important that you find out,
or it could lead to the deaths of your current fish or your new South
American Cichlids.
Once you purchase your South American Cichlids, there are several things
that you will need to do in order to ensure that they have a long lifespan
and good health. First, you will need to make certain they are fed a healthy
diet that meets all of their nutritional needs. A good saying to keep in
mind while caring for your fish is this: "A healthy fish is a hungry fish."
Do not overfeed your fish, as they will literally eat themselves to death.
Feed them moderate amounts, and make certain you watch to make certain your
fish continue to have a good appetite.
Once the nutritional needs of your South American Cichlids are met, you will
need to make certain you keep up on your water changes. As your tank cannot
provide all of the aspects of a real pond, lake or river, you need to take
the time and care to ensure that they have the good water quality they need
in order to survive. Depending on the type of South American Cichlids you
own, you will need to do either a weekly water change, or a bi-weekly water
changes. The tank should also be cycled before you introduce your Cichlids.
With the proper care and handling, you can enjoy the beauty of South
American Cichlids while safeguarding them from illness and disease.
